National Novel Writing Month

Background to National Novel Writing Month:

National Novel Writing Month – often shortened to NaNoWriMo – is an annual internet based creative writing project which takes place in November.  The participants aim to write 50,000-word manuscripts between the 1st and 30th November.  The official website provides tips for writer's block and creates a community to support writers.  The project started in July 1999 with just 21 participants, by 2010 there were 200,000 people taking part writing a total of 2.8 billion words.

50,000 words is a big ask for many of us but writing most certainly has its benefits for your well-being.

According to our friend Google there are 129,864,880 books in the entire world, there are all sorts of resources out there to help you write your own story and the great news is that book sales are up.

When you glance through Twitter and Linked in profiles so many profiles include speaker and book publisher, many individuals wanting to share their thought leadership, business and personal story.  With such an easy route to writing your personal story and route to market via Amazon it feels like anyone who's anyone has a book to share.

If I wrote a book it would be titled ‘There isn't always a plan – sometimes things just happen' and it would be about how I came to set up an ethical sourcing company back in 1996 – from a sequence of events, which led me to be fortunate enough to set up and run my own SME, now in its 23rd year.  If you were to write a book what would be your title be and why?  Today it is so easy to find amazing books that share stories, inspire and offer incredible stories of perseverance.

When we think about novel writing, we don't often think about physically writing - it is assumed we type the words but, writing has many benefits to your wellbeing.  I don't know about you, but I spend so much time on my laptop, iPad and mobile I rarely put pen to paper.   But putting pen to paper in writing a letter, a post card or, keeping a journal is actually a great way to clear your mind.

There are many sources of information out there to tell you writing brings many benefits, helping you to communicate better – if you can write well, you can express yourself verbally and communicate better with others both in business and your personal life.  A recent study found reflective journals are an effective way to develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills.

Research also shows individuals who keep a journal are more likely to achieve their personal goals. A study found that students assigned to write about their thoughts and feelings regarding upcoming college life had an increase in working memory seven weeks later than another group who assisted a trivial topic.  Personally, I find if I write a list – it stays in my head and I don't need to refer to list because it remains in my memory.

Additionally, it is said that writing frees up mental RAM – your brain is like a hard drive. Researchers theorize that by expressing yourself through writing about things that are bothersome, stress and worries decrease, enabling more space and resources to be freed up for memory capacity. When you note down your ideas, thoughts and emotions it helps your brain to unload some baggage, giving it room to think about other things.  Or better yet, with all that extra space, it could even begin to relax.

Expressive writing, which involves personal and emotional expression, has been found to help deal with traumatic and upsetting experiences. A research study found that participants who wrote about their personal traumatic experiences benefited from:

  • Improved health
  • Fewer stress-related trips to the doctor
  • Reduced stress levels
  • Improved mood

Study participants were able to vent negative emotions and organize their anxious feeling associated with trauma. Writing expressively therefore has a healing quality.

In another study, university employees who utilized expressive writing to write about traumatic experiences had a 28.6% decrease in absentee rates that month from work, compared to the 48.5% increase in absentee rates a month employee who wrote about non-traumatic topics.

Gratitude – writing can help you focus on what you feel grateful for and this can boost your subjective well-being in everyday life. Research has shown that subjects who kept gratitude journals every week (compared to those who wrote about hassles or neutral events in their journals):

  • Were more physically active
  • Reported few physical ailments
  • Were more content with their lives
  • Were more optimistic about their week ahead

In a press release, the study's author Robert Wilson, a Neuropsychologist, said that, "Our study suggests that exercising your brain by taking part in activities [such as reading and writing] across a person's lifetime, from childhood through old age, is important for brain health in old age.”
